Skype to come to Blackberry, iPhone

30Mar09

For different reasons, I’ve become a much more frequent user of Skype lately. The only downside is that it still isn’t available for soem phones, including the Blackberry.

Well that’s about to change.

The application is set to be released for the Blackberry in May [TechDigest], but much more exciting (for some people anyway) is the fact that the iPhone is finally getting a version of the popular programme.

iPhone users should be able to use Wifi or 3G to access the service, calling other skype users free of charge. The version fo the iPhone Touch that includes the microphone will also be compatible with the application.

The only downside is, no video calls just yet.

While I’m not convinced that your average 3G user wants to make video calls with their networks (something I’m sure that most people would agree with), Skype users are a slightly different breed.

I’ve never made a video call on my 3G network, but frequently use Skype to video call friends who are travelling. So video calls get the thumbs up from me.
